Permanent Makeup
All permanent makeup clients will have to fill out a brief health questionnaire to ensure the safety of the procedure. You can click here to review the Illinois “What to Know Before Getting a Tattoo” PDF, or review the following list of contraindications:
- Diabetes
- History of Hemophilia (blood clotting)
- History of skin diseases, skin lesions, or sensitivities to soaps, disinfectants, etc.
- History of allergies or adverse reactions to pigments, dyes, or latex
- History of Epilepsy, seizures, fainting, or Narcolepsy
- Use of medications such as anticoagulants that thin the blood and/or interfere with blood clotting
- Human immunodeficiency (HIV)
- Hepatitis
- Keloid scarring (raised scar tissue)
Most permanent makeup services will follow a similar procedure. Clients should avoid:
- Facials and Botox (at least 2 weeks prior)
- Tanning and sunbathing (at least 10 days prior)
- Blood thinning medications (1 week prior)
- Waxing, tweezing, laminating, or tinting brows (1 week prior)
- Caffeine, alcohol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen (24 hours prior)
Upon client arrival, your technician will review your Medical Questionnaire and discuss any questions you might have. An outline will be made for brow and lip services, and liner thickness for eyeliner. The outline will be traced and once the skin is open, numbing will be applied to lessen pain levels. After this first session, about 10 days of healing will follow. Skin typically peels during this time and color will fade about 1-3 shades. We’ll see you for your touch-up appointment in the next 6-8 weeks, after which touch-ups will only be necessary every 1-2 years.
Eyebrow Shading
You may have seen a couple of different names for permanent brows. Multiple styles can be accomplished through the Ombre shading technique, which uses a buildup of pigment called Stipple shading. Powder brows have a bold shading throughout the bottom of the brow but lighten towards the top and front. Next, we’ll review the different techniques for hairstrokes. Most people are familiar with hair strokes being done through the Microblading technique, however, this method tends to leave increasing scar tissue with every touchup due to the use of blade-like needles. Instead, we prefer to create hairlike strokes with the use of the same machine we use for Ombre or Powder brows, creating what we call Nano Brows. These hair strokes can be placed throughout the brow or just in the front and can be combined with Ombre shading to create either a Soft Combo Brow or a Bold Combo Brow. [Insert chart]
Once you’ve discussed your desired style with your technician, you’ll start the brow mapping process. The area will be thoroughly cleansed and prepped to create an outline. We’ll start by measuring the natural brows and trying to create a shape that makes both brows appear as “identical” as possible. Most people have “sisters, not twins” so keeping that in mind we’ll still try to find symmetry & a thickness (or thinness) of your preference. [Insert brow mapping picture & video]
The last portion of our consultation will be color matching. In general, we may decide on a color that may appear a bit more ‘warm’ than we intend the final color to be. This is because a lot of warmth may be lost through the healing process, and we don’t want the brows to fade to a gray tone.
Aftercare for brows is pretty straightforward. You’ll want to wash at least 3 times the day of your appointment, with unscented antibacterial soap. However, you should keep the area completely dry over the next 10 days minus the use of either Aquaphor or A&D ointment. To keep the area dry in the shower, you can use a thin piece of cling wrap. Over these 10 days, you’ll notice the area dry up and the skin will start to peel. Try NOT to pick at or ‘help’ the peeling process. Avoid heat, steam, sunlight, and makeup for the entire week, and take note of any changes after healing.
Lash Enhancing Eyeliner
At Unity Aesthetics, we prefer a subtle kind of eyeliner, providing a natural shading to the lash line. We highly encourage this kind of liner because eyeliner wings are typically displaced over time, and we believe in a small accentuation of the natural eyes. Therefore, we won't be mapping and measuring the eyes much. Instead, we’ll make note of the amount of rows of lashes. This will determine the thickness of the shading. We’ll also talk about color options. We frequently prefer the first session to consist of a warmer color, such as medium-dark brown, before layering black at the second appointment. For those with lighter skin tones or eye color, brown may be preferred for natural shading. Aftercare consists of daily ointment application, avoiding heat, steam, sunlight, and ALL eye makeup for the following week.
Lip Blushing
Lip Blushing follows the natural shape of the lips, adding just a touch of soft, natural color. Your technician will create an outline of the shape, which can only be adjusted on lip skin. In some cases, this can give the appearance of thicker lips, but please note that we can not tattoo onto regular skin for the illusion of bigger lips because the pigment tattooed onto this skin typically heals much darker. If your goal is to create that illusion, we recommend first applying other lip-enhancing treatments, such as injections done at least 2 weeks prior to lip blushing.
This treatment is truly to serve color options. In some, this could be a color lightening for people with darker complections, called lip neutralization. Customization can be done for those who seek neutralization, but they may require an extra session to achieve a perfect shade match. For others, it is still recommended to complete 2 sessions, especially for those wanting to reach a darker shade.
*PLEASE NOTE*
Those who are HSV positive MUST talk to their physicians about preventative medication to avoid cold sores after their treatment. Anyone who has ever experienced a cold sore is susceptible to an outbreak, which may also affect the quality of the healing process. Thankfully, medications have proven to aid in diminishing the chances of any appearing. Please talk to your doctor at least 10 days before your appointment.
Aftercare will call for 3 cleanses on the day of the appointment with unscented antibacterial soap. Swelling and even bruising are common for the immediate 24-48 hours after application. During this time, it would probably be easiest to consume soft foods, avoiding spicy or messy meals. Total healing time lasts about 10 days, and peeling is common in the first 2-6 days. During this time, keep lips lathered in Aquaphor and do not try to pick at the dead skin. Avoid heat, steam, lip products, and sunlight for two weeks.
